Starting in 2025, Mni Sota Fund is proud to offer a free Tax Clinic dedicated to helping our community navigate the tax season with confidence and ease. Our certified tax preparers are here to provide high-quality, no-cost tax preparation services to individuals and families, with a focus on supporting Indigenous communities across Minnesota.
What We Offer:
Free Tax Preparation: Our certified tax preparers will assist with federal, state, and local tax returns, ensuring all eligible credits and deductions are maximized, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC).
Expert Guidance: Our preparers are trained to understand tax regulations and requirements, offering reliable and accurate service you can trust.
Community-Focused Support: We’re committed to making tax preparation accessible, culturally relevant, and stress-free, helping community members meet financial goals and secure refunds that contribute to long-term economic empowerment.
Who is Eligible:
Our clinic is open to low- to moderate-income individuals and families. Specific income guidelines and any additional eligibility requirements will be provided closer to tax season.
How to Get Started:
Appointments will be available by reservation, with limited walk-in options.
Through this Tax Clinic, Mni Sota Fund aims to provide financial empowerment tools that promote economic equity, giving every participant access to quality tax services and maximizing financial resources for our community.
What to Bring
We want to do your taxes right and get you the maximum refund. In order to do that, we’ll need you to bring all of the necessary documents. Read through the list below and bring all of your paperwork to tax preparation!
When possible, please bring the original or a physical copy of your documents.
Individuals

1. PERSONAL INFORMATION
Picture ID
Birthdate for all persons listed on the tax return
Social Security card or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) card or letter for all persons listed on the tax return
Routing and account numbers for your savings account, checking account, and/or prepaid card
2. YEAR-END INCOME STATEMENTS
W-2s for each job
1099-Misc for MN one-time rebate payment
1099 forms for retirement, Social Security, unemployment, interest, dividends, stock sales, and miscellaneous income
Year-end amounts for MFIP, SSI, MSA, GA, veterans benefits, workers’ compensation
3. EDUCATION AND CHILD CARE CREDITS
Record of educational expenses you paid for your children in grades K-12
Tuition expenses paid for you or your child to attend a college or university (Form 1098-T)
Student loan interest statement (Form 1098-E)
Child care expenses: Provider name, address, and tax ID or Social Security number
4. PROPERTY TAX REFUNDS AND DEDUCTIONS
Homeowners: Mortgage interest and real estate taxes paid in 2023, and the 2024 Property Tax statement mailed by the county in March
Renters: Certificate of Rent Paid (CRP)
Mobile home owners: All of the above documents
5. ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS
Previous year’s tax return
Verification of health insurance if purchased through MNsure (Form 1095-A)
